Protests Erupt In Karnataka Over Veer Savarkar Yet Again!

The Assembly saw intense scenes on the opening day as the opposition parties raised slogans and walked out of the house. The action of the ruling party did not go well with the opposition and they staged a protest.
The Maharashtra-born personality Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Veer Savarkar is controversial as the right-wing ideologies him and the left criticizes him. The Bharatiya Janata Party sees him as a great personality. On many occasions, the party called him a great patriot.
Taking the love and respect for Savarkar a few steps ahead, the BJP-led government in Karnataka reportedly put a big portrait of him at the state assembly. Thai created a big controversy and Congress leaders walked out of the house.
Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah who is currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition raised severe objections and asked what made the government put up the portrait of Savarkar inside the Assembly.
The opposition delegation led by Siddaramaiah held a protest by holding pictures of Jawaharlal Nehru and walking out of the house. Before walking out, the opposition leaders sat on the steps of the house to show their dissatisfaction with this.
The Congress leaders are alleging that the BJP on purpose did that to skip the questions on issues like corruption and others. They say that the ruling party knows the Congress hates Savarkar and the portrait will make them stage a protest and the saffron party wants the same.
Controversies starting in the name of Savarkar are not new in politics. This happened many times and this is a new controversy that erupted. Earlier when Rahul Gandhi led Bharat Jodo Yatra reached Karnataka flexes with Savarkar's pictures erected which became a controversy.
Veer Savarkar is a big Hindutva personality as per the right-wing supporters and the Bharatiya Janata Party falls under the right wing. He took forward the Hindu Rashtra term coined by Chandranath Basu. Through his books and literary work Veer Savarkar became a big name in the nation. He served as the President of the Hindu Mahasabha as well.
