In what we call a most unfortunate event on festival day Thirty-two people, most of them women and children, were killed and several injured in a stampede that broke out at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna

The incident was happened during Dussehra celebrations and after burning of the Ravana effigy at the Gandhi Maidan.The tragedy occurred when people were returning after watching the "Ravan Vadh" ceremony where a huge crowd had gathered to witness the vadha.Officials said the dead were mainly women and children.

The incident happened after some people in the crowd started jostling with each other to move forward.Some eyewitnesses said that panic broke out following rumours that a live electric wire had fallen on the ground.

The Dussehra celebrations at Gandhi Maidan are organised by the state government and Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manji also present at the Gandhi Maidan where people watched an arrow setting the 60 feet tall effigy of Ravan into flames.

The state government has announced compensation of Rs.3 lakh each to the kin of all the victims. It has also ordered a probe into the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manji to inquire about the stampede. He sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each for the next of those killed.
