Hearing a plea pertaining to a much-talked-about issue, the Supreme Court on Thursday made sensational comments on media outlets reporting the oral remarks of the judges.

The Election Commission of India had knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court against the remarks of the Madras High Court, holding it responsible for the spike in Coronavirus infections in the country.

In the petition, the Election Commission sought directives from the country's top court to restrain the media from reporting the oral remarks, the judges make during the hearing of the cases.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court said, it will not be appropriate to ask the High Court to don't make observations during the hearing. The apex court also said that it cannot restrain the media from reporting oral observations.

'Now people are more digital-oriented and hence look to the internet for information. It would do no good to prevent the new medium from reporting proceedings. Constitutional bodies would do better than to complain about this,' the SC maintained.

However, the Supreme Court agreed with the claims of the EC that the words used by the Madras High Court are harsh. The language used by the bench should be sensitive and the judges should restrain the off-the-cuff remarks.

The Supreme Court was all praise for the High Courts for supervising the pandemic management during the tough time in the respective states. In handling the Coronavirus pandemic situation, the High Courts played a commendable role.
