Researchers attribute Testosterone level to high risk among men to catch Covid
By: Tupaki Desk | 26 May 2021 11:16 AM GMTIt is a known fact that, compared to women, men come in contact with the deadly Covid virus more and the death percentage among men is also more than that of women. A recent study added strength to this.
A recent study was carried out by the researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri which states that low testosterone levels are linked to the severe Covid risk in men compared to women.
The researchers have examined blood samples of both men and women at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis. The subjects include those who were infected with Covid-19 or those who developed the symptoms of the virus.
The researchers believe that low levels of testosterone could be the main reason that makes men more vulnerable to the dreaded virus as a major share of patients with low testosterone levels were at risk as they need intense care.
To get the exact data, the researchers have measured the hormone levels at various points. The hormone levels of the patients, who were admitted to the hospital were measured on their date of admission, Day 3,7,14. If the patients are at hospitals, their hormone levels were measured on the 28th day too.
The study attributed the Covid-19 severity in men to the testosterone levels and said, there is no data on if sex hormones are linked to the predisposition or not. The study was conducted on 90 men. 66 men had severe Covid virus, while 25 of them died during the study.
"In addition, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and many chronic illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, renal insufficiency, and chronic lung disease, are associated with lower serum testosterone concentrations in men," the researchers said.
