Rs 25 crore worth of liquor sold in just 4 hours

Can you believe, the twin cities sold a whopping Rs 25 crore worth of liquor on the evening before the lockdown? Unbelievable but true. This is the amount of liquor sold in one evening prior to the announcement of lockdown in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The twin cities have 420 liquor outlets and most of these outlets had sold 90 per cent of their stocks. Some had to bring even the buffer stocks to address the massive demand on Tuesday day evening. From Wednesday morning, the lockdown was put in place. Usually, the sale is about Rs 5 lakh per day per shop. The rush eased only after the government announced that the liquor shops would be open from 6 am to 10 am even during the lockdown. Sources in the liquor business said that during the first lockdown, even teetotelars queued up to buy liquor in large quantities. Their idea was to sell the liquor at higher rates to the 'needy.' This could have happened this time too, they said.
If the liquor dealers association sources are to be believed, the panic buying is likely to continue for another two days. After that, the sales would plateau, they said. Once it becomes clear that liquor shops would be opened, the rush would decrease gradually, they said.
