Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru passed away on Saturday morning. He was undergoing treatment at the Health Care Global (HCG) hospital in Bengaluru after being diagnosed with cancer of the liver.

Karthikeyan was 66 and he survived by wife and two sons. Karthikeyan, who was suffering from liver cancer, had been taken to the US for treatment last year after which he was shifted to the hospital in Bengaluru.Final rites of the leader are to be conducted at his home in Sasthamangalam at 6 pm on Sunday.

Known for his clean image and easy accessibility, Karthikeyan began his political career as an activist of the Kerala Students Union (KSU). Karthikeyan has been elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly as M.L.A in 1982 (Trivandrum North),1991,1996,2001 and 2006 (Aryanad) and in 2011 (Aruvikkara).

Several politicians mourned the death of Karthikeyan and said his place was irreplaceable.Mourning his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "My condolences to the family & well-wishers of Kerala Assembly Speaker, Shri G.Karthikeyan on his demise. May his soul rest in peace."

"Shri G.Karthikeyan will be remembered as a grassroots leader who dedicated his life to serving the people of Kerala," he added.
