Know what's the fastest moving goods after condoms in the medical shops these days? It's the abortion pills. Yes. If the medical stores owners are to be believed, the sale of abortion pills has gone up by 40 per cent during the lockdown period. This follows the rise in the sales of condoms. With lockdown providing lot of opportunities for the people for conjugal bliss, the sales of both condoms, contraceptives and the abortion pills has touched the roof.

But the most worrying aspect of the whole thing is that the abortion pills have to be dispensed only on production of a doctor's prescription. But, in the twin cities, many people are buying the pills without any prescription. Even the pharmacists do not seem to be minding. According to drug department officials, at least 40 per cent of the abortion pills are sold without any prescription. Doctors say that buying these pills without prescription and popping them up without medical guidance could be highly hazardous. It could even lead to death in some cases. Excessive bleeding and damage to the reproductive systems too could happen, they said.

In most medical shops, the abortion pills are in short supply even as the demand for them is growing. One of the reasons, according to the pharmacists is that these pills are made in China and are exported to India. With the lockdown in force, the supplies from China have dried up. Despite that, the demand for abortion pills is growing.
