Tennis sensation Sania Mirza was conferred with the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna which happens to be the highest sporting honour in the country.
Sania, clad in a maroon saree and blue blazer, received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee at the Darbar hall in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Apart from the Medal, She received a Certificate and Cash Prize of Rs 7.5 lakh. What else? Sania garnered the loudest applause from the attendants when she received the honour. In fact, She is only the 2nd Tennis Star to receive this sporting honour.
Arjuna Awards were presented to 17 sportspersons recommended by Justice VK Bali's Panel. Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma was one of them but he could attend due to the ongoing Sri Lankan tour.
Sania Mirza responded: "Honoured, humbled and blessed. Thank you #KhelRatna".
