The Constitutional bench headed by the Chief Justice of India(CJI) S A Bobde, which comprises other Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian heard the petition and served notices to the Centre to seek its response.
The petition was filed by advocate Vineet Jindal. The Counsel has knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court to seek directives to the Union government to frame a law to prosecute people who spread fake news and hate speech.
After hearing the petition, the Supreme Court served notices to the Centre in this regard and sought its response on setting up a system to remove the fake news and hate speech.
In the petition, the petitioner called the reach of social media wider compared to traditional media. The advocate cited the examples of social media misused to incite communal violence in the country.
The Supreme Court has tagged the PIL on regulating the social media platforms with the plea pending on the same issue. The court said it will hear both the pleas together.
Earlier on the 25th of January, this year, the Supreme Court asked the Central government, Press Council of India (PCI), and News Broadcasters Association (NBA) to tell its response on forming a media tribunal to look at the complaints filed against the media platforms.
