As the Centre has unveiled its lockdown withdrawal plan, questions are beginning to be asked as to whether the whole exercise of lockdown was successful. The answer is a resounding YES. The over-50-day lockdown has helped slow the speed of the virus spread and gave the government time to regroup its resources and prepare for the real fight against the virus.
See how India slowed down the spread of Corona. Thanks to the lockdown, it took 86 days for the first 25000 positive cases. From 25000, it took 11 days to reach 50000 cases. To reach 75000, it took 7 days and now to reach 1 lakh mark, it took five days. But the growth rate of positive cases went down from 7.6 to 7.0, then to 5.7 to 5.1 per cent. Thanks to the lockdown, the doubling time (the time taken for the number of cases to double) has grown to 12 days. This is no mean achievement.
Also, India managed to save Eastern, North Eastern states and most importantly UP, Bihar and Jharkhand from the spread of Covid. Today, the situation in only four of the states is alarming. Maharashtra accounts for 39 per cent of the cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (13.7 per cent), Gujarat (11 percent) and Delhi (10.4) per cent.
To reach the one lakh mark, it took 109 days. This is no mean achievement. Thus, per lakh cases in India stand at 6, while the global average is a whopping 60. The timely lockdown has helped belie the doomsday soothsayers who predicted 33 crore Corona positive cases by May.
