Slight Relief On GST On Food In Multiplexes?
By: Tupaki Desk | 7 July 2023 9:57 PM ISTThe Narendra Modi government at the center is showing stars whenever it is possible in the name of GST. However, the government is going to show some mercy this time. The government which shows interest in earning revenue is behaving differently, say many. It is said that the government might tell happy news on the multiplexes. Middle-class and upper-middle-class people prefer multiplexes.
There is no need to mention how food items and beverage prices will be higher than the ticket prices in Multiplexes. There are many jokes about this. The food prices will be double the prices of ticket fares. On top of this, there is GST which attracts 18 percent. It is said that a decision would be taken on putting a brake on the charges. The GST Council meeting which will be held on the 11th of this month might be a platform for this.
The proposal of reducing the GST on food items and cool drinks in multiplexes from the existing 18 percent to 5 percent might be discussed at the GST council. If a decision is taken on this, then the 13 percent burden would be reduced. 13 rupees for 100 rupees would be reduced.
As 18 percent GST is charged on movie tickets in the multiplexes, the same is being implemented for food and beverages. The Karnataka government requested that the GST should be reduced to 5 percent as charged by Restaurants. It is being said that there is a possibility of taking a positive decision.
While the majority of Ministers in the team of 8 members preferred imposing 28 percent GST on online gaming, horse racing, and casino, Goa which sees high revenues in these aspects said that 18 percent GST would be sufficient. There is also a chance of taking key decisions on the cars. More clarity is expected on MUV and XUV vehicles like SUV vehicles.
Currently, the SUV(Sports Utility Vehicles) attract a 22 percent additional compensation cess in addition to the 28 percent GST. The Fitment committee proposed that 22 compensation cess should be implemented for all the Utility vehicles (MUV,XUV). It proposed that the cess should be implemented for vehicles that are 4 meters long and have Engine capacity above 1500cc and Ground clearance above 170 mm. A decision is likely to be taken after the meeting.
