Rich Farmers must pay TAX: CEA

Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian opined State Governments need to make a clear distinction between rich and poor farmers.
Arvind Subramanian: 'As per the existing law, Only Centre couldn't levy tax on Agriculture Income. State Governments are free to tax agriculture income. Is it really difficult to identify a poor farmer and rich farmer? Why shouldn't rich people, irrespective of where they obtain their income, must be taxed?'.
Recently, NITI Aayog Member Bibek Debroy recommended Centre to levy tax on Agriculture Income. This led to a huge uproar all over the country.
When thousands of farmers have been committing suicides every year, How could Centre impose tax on Agriculture Income? Any such move would have a drastic impact on the food production in the country.
