Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board claimed ownership of Taj Mahal being built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

The Supreme Court directed the Waqf Board to produce necessary documents bearing the signature of Shah Jahan within one week to prove its claim. 'Who is ready to believe that Taj Mahal belongs to the Waqf Board? How did Shah Jahan sign the waqfnama? Where did you receive it from him?,' questioned the Top Court.

Advocate ADN Rao who appeared for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) informed the Apex Court that waqfnama doesn't exist when Shah Jahan was alive. He informed, Properties taken over from the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar were vested with the British Queen. After Independence, The structures were taken over by Indian Government under 1948 Act.

Shah Jahan built Taj Mahal in memory of his deceased wife Mumtaz in the 17th century. He used to see the monument from his cell in Agra Fort while serving house arrest awarded by his son Aurangzeb. He breathed his last in the cell, 18 years after the death of his wife.
