The Supreme Court Today permitted linking of Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number (PAN) which is mandatory for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR). At the same time, A ruling has been passed that linking Bank Accounts with Aadhaar isn't mandatory.
Apex Court maintained Aadhaar can be preferred to identify the beneficiaries of Welfare Schemes, but it can't be made mandatory for bank accounts and mobile connections. SC made it clear neither any private firm or banks can seek Aadhaar Details from public.
This ruling was passed after various petitions were filed questioning the constitutional validity of Aadhaar citing it violates the privacy of the people. The Top Court opined UIDAI obtaining biometric data of the applicants can't be considered as violation of right to privacy.
