Cauvery Dispute: SC Sensational Verdict!
By: Tupaki Desk | 16 Feb 2018 9:04 AM GMTThe water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the 765-km long Cauvery River, which is also known to be Ganga of the South, has been continuing since years. On Friday, Supreme Court delivered a sensational verdict reducing the share of Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery water. Which means, Karnataka's share is gonna get bigger from now.
Three Judges SC Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra felt Karnataka deserves more share considering the drinking water demand for 'global city' Bengaluru. As a result, 4.75 TMC has been allotted for drinking water out of it's increased share. Total enhanced share is exactly 14.75 TMC to take the Karnataka's draw from Cauvery to 284.75 TMC.
Whereas, SC opined the irrigation area of Tamil Nadu hasn't been assessed properly. The Apex Court even blamed Tamil Nadu Govt for ignoring the availability of ground water. Tamil Nadu was permitted to draw half of the 20 TMC groundwater beneath the Cauvery basin. From now, Karnataka will release only 177.25 TMC of Cauvery Water to Tamil Nadu instead of 192 TMC.
At the same time, Allocations of 30 TMC for Kerala and 7 TMC for Puducherry remained unchanged.
