The Supreme Court Today passed a judgment banning liquor shops on National and State Highways across the country. Existing Liquor Shop licenses won't be renewed post March 31st, 2017.

3-Judge bench comprising of Chief Justice TS Thakur, DY Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao took serious note of 1.5 lakh death per year in road mishaps. As a result, Order has been passed for closure of liquor shops and signages indicating their presence on all the highways.

On December 7th, The Apex Court slammed Punjab Government for seeking permission to liquor shops on highways. It directed the State Government to take measure that would be beneficial for the society instead of merely announcing ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh to the fatalities.

SC opined filling the coffers should be the priority of State Governments while issuing liquor shop licenses. It expressed displeasure over inaction by Governments despite so many deaths happen due to drunken driving.
