When India is traveling towards the worst crisis with the Coronavirus pandemic, the Supreme Court has taken the hearing on issues like shortage of oxygen, medicines, vaccines, and other issues today.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court said it could not be a silent spectator in the crisis situation and added that stopping High Courts from hearing petitions is not its intention.

The three-judge bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, LN Rao, and Ravindra S Bhat said, the Supreme Court is playing the complementary role. We are not preventing the High Courts from hearing the petitions. If the High Courts have any issues in hearing the petitions, we will help, the bench said.

The country's top court has issued directives to the Union Government to submit a report on the supply of the medical oxygen and the oxygen supply needed by the states and the measures taken by the government on the availability of the essential drugs.

"It is necessary for us to clarify what is the purpose of issuing notice? The object of these proceedings is not to take over what the High Court is monitoring. High Courts have a valuable role. They are in a better position to monitor," the apex court said.

Amid the Covid-19 crisis in the country, last week, the apex court has decided to take up petitions on the distribution of oxygen, vaccines, and medicines. The apex court has also served notices to the Centre in this regard.
