Sushma Swaraj was elected as MLA for the first time in 1977 from Haryana and even became a Cabinet Minister in the same year. She was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1990 and Lok Sabha in 1996. Served as I&B Minister in Vajpayee's regime. In 1999 Polls, Sushma Swaraj contested against Sonia Gandhi in Bellary. She might have lost but increased her stature by accepting the challenge. Sushma handled the role of Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha during UPA-2 with dignity. She was re-elected to Lok Sabha in 2014.

She decided against contesting 2019 Elections due to health issues after kidney transplantation.
