TDP in last gasp on its 40th foundation day
X
TDP, a party formed four decades ago on this day and has seen its heydays, is now in its proverbial last gasp. The party, which ruled the states for well over 25 years and played a very important role even on the national arena , is now fighting to save itself.

The TDP invoked the Telugu pride and created a strong support base for Telugu self-respect, is today a former shadow of itself. It had challenged the might of Indira Gandhi and defeated the Congress repeatedly. Soon after a stunning victory in 1983 that catapulted thespian NTR to power, the TDP began playing a key role at the national level NTR even headed the National Front.

But every good story has to end sometime and parties dominated by dynasty politics will end because of dynasty politics themselves. This is true for even the TDP. All dynastic political parties like Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Janata Dal, INLD and others are facing the same fate The TDP too has lost it out in the same way. The party became more and more individual centric. Ever since legendary NTR was stabbed in the back, the party became Chandrababu centric. As a result, no second-level leadership could be created. The six-year YSRCP rule has almost rendered the TDP ineffective. But, YSR’s unfortunate demise and the circumstances post-bifurcation of AP has given the TDP another lease of life.

Instead of using this period to reinvent itself, the party lapsed back into caste politics and tried to push Nara Lokesh as the next-gen leader. This proved to be TDP’s undoing. The party lost power to the Jagan juggernaut, who stormed the TDP citadel on the crest of an anti-incumbency wave. The recent panchayat and municipal elections have shown that the TDP is all but decimated. An aging Chandrababu, an ineffectual Lokesh and a moribund organisational set up have left the party seriously dented and damaged. The party may now find it very difficult to reinvent itself. On its 40th day, uncertainty is staring the TDP in its face.
