Telugu is no more the 3rd Most Spoken Language in India. Yes, Marathi has replaced Telugu as per the new Census.

Hindi continues to be the most spoken language in India. Bengali holds the second position. While 8.3 crore people speak Marathi, Count of Telugu speakers stood at 8.1 crore.

Top 5 Slowest Growing Languages:

1) Nepali - 1.98%, 2) Malayalam - 5.36%, Sindhi - 9.34%, 4) Telugu - 9.63%, 5) Bodo - 9.81%.

About 2.6 lakh people claimed English is their Mother Tongue. In 2001, 2.26 lakh people have been in this category.

Urdu-speaking people dropped by 1.58 percent. Around 50 million people deemed it as their mother tongue.

Konkani-speaking People have been decreasing rapidly. A drop of 95 lakh was recorded.

However, Experts feel Telugu Language could have been in 2nd or 3rd position had if Telugus living in Odisha, Kharagpur and Bhilai are taken into consideration. They say Telugu would emerge as 2nd most spoken language if population of speakers is becomes a prime parameter.
