This is why farm laws are good!!
By: Tupaki Desk | 14 Feb 2021 4:03 AM GMTHere's one clear-cut benefit of the farm laws that some farmers from Punjab are so vehemently opposing. And this pertains to farmers from our very own Nizamabad. Yes. The turmeric farmers from Nizamabad are using the provisions of the farm laws when the buyers became a cartel and tried to bring down turmeric buying prices.
This being the turmeric harvesting season, the farmers have brought their turmeric produce to the Nizamabad market yard. But, the middlemen and the buyers formed a cartel and have brought down the turmeric price. They brought it to as low as Rs 5701 per quintal by January 20. But the farmers stopped selling their protest. As a result, the prices have gone up to Rs 7686 per quintal. But, in the neighbouring Sangli market, which too is a big market for turmeric, the prices have shot up to Rs 10000 per quintal. Consequently, the farmers have diverted their stocks to Sangli market. The difference in pricing is around Rs 2500 to Rs 3000 per quintal.
A farmer said that due to this move the buyers in Nizamabad too are offering a relatively higher price for turmeric. When we have choice, we can prevent the cartelization of the buyers, middlemen and contractors, said a farmers. Are those protesting against the farm laws listening?
