Killing someone for promoting a thorough handwash? This may sound bizarre in time of global Corona scare, where the doctors and the authorities are promoting repeated handwash to ward off the viral attack. But, back in the olden days, a doctor was beaten black and blue for promoting antiseptic handwash. What more? The colleagues and other the medical fraternity thought he has gone nuts.
Yes. Way back in 1847, a Hungarian doctor , Ignaz Simmelweiss, realised that unclean hands of the doctors and nurses were responsible for the deaths of several pregnant mothers in the hospital. The doctors were performing autopsies and then were doing the deliveries without cleaning their hands. Seeing this, he suggested that the doctors and nurses should wash their hands in chlorinated water before performing deliveries. He was branded a mad man and was sent to lunatic asylum. When he resisted the doctors and the staff, he was badly beaten. So severe were the injuries that he died of them.
But, 150 years later, hand wash and sanitisation have become inseparable part of the medical practices and even daily life. In fact, a world handwash day is also being practiced worldwide to promote cleaner hands. Remembering the pioneering contributions of Ignaz Simmelweiss, the Google had a doodle on him a few days ago.
