The ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP were locked in a tight fight in the local body elections in Rajasthan. The election results are seen as a shot in the arm for the ruling Congress as it has emerged as the largest party. But, there is consolation for the BJP as it has managed to perform fairly well and regained some lost ground.

Out of the 2105 seats to the 49 local bodies spread in 24 districts, the Congress was less than half mark. It could bag 961 seats, while the BJP won 737 seats. Independents have won 386 seats. The NCP won 2, the BSP 16 and three to the CPM. In addition, 14 seats were won unopposed. According to a press release from the state election officer, as many as 71.53 per cent of the voters have voted. The maximum voting was recrded in Nasirabad Municipal Corporation of Ajmer district. A staggering 91.57 per cent polling was reported, while Udaipur Municipal Corporation has recorded the lowest at 54.84 per cent.

Expressing happiness at the results, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said that the results have proved that the people of Rajasthan are solidly behind the Congress. "The results of the civic elections which have been held today are good. After the Zilla Parishad by-election, Panchayati Raj by-election and Vidhan Sabha (Mandawa, Khivansar) by-election, the people of the state gave their support to the public welfare schemes and development works of our government...,"he tweeted.

In another tweet, Gehlot said thus" "Sensitive, accountable and transparent governance and our commitment to provide good governance have been strengthened further. I thank all the voters and congratulate the Congress Party workers, officials and the winning candidates."
