Top Maoist Narmada alias Nirmala, who lived in the Dandakaranya for over four decades to wage a war against the Government, died of breast cancer. She died in a hospice in Hyderabad on Sunday. Her husband Rani Satyanarayana alias Kiran is currently lodged in Byculla jail in Mumbai.

Narmada alias Nirmala came from a Communist family with close links to Naxalite KG Satyamurthy. She hails from Kondapavuluru in Gannavaram of Krishna district. She then joined the movement in 1980s and extended technical support to the Maoists. Later, she entered Dandakaranya in 1990. Though several other top Maoists surrendered Narmada chose to fight on.

She participated in several encounters with the police and managed to escape from their dragnet several times. She also played a key role in organizing the tribal women of Dandakaranya. She led the armed assaults on the Government and the security forces in Dandakaranya region.

In 2018, she came to Hyderabad for medical treatment and was diagnosed as suffering from breast cancer. While under treatment, the Maharashtra police arrested her. However, she managed to get an order from the courts to get treated in a hospice care hospital. She breathed her last on Sunday. Several Maoist sympathisers mourned her death and recalled her service to the Maoist movement in Dandakaranya.
