BJP leader and Road Transport & Highways and the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Nitin Gadkari came up with a proposal to tackle the air pollution in the country.

The proposal bats for the idea to impose a green tax on a specific category of vehicles that omit air-pollution. The proposal is said to have been approved and will come into effect very soon.

The transport vehicles that are older than eight years at the time of fitness certificate renewal will be imposed with a special tax called Green Tax. The tax would be around 10 percent to 25 percent of the road tax.

Coming to the personal vehicles, the same Green Tax will be imposed on the older vehicles at the time of fitness certificate renewal. However, the tax will be applicable for vehicles that are older than 15 years.

On the other hand, the older vehicles used by the government departments and public sector bodies will also be scrapped under the deregistration policy. The vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped.

According to the information, the new policy is expected to come into effect from the 1st of April 2022.

The union government is drafting the new guidelines for the green tax proposal. The guidelines will be issued to the states and then the states have to implement the new tax policy.

The main intention behind the new tax policy is to make the commuters get rid of the old and pollution-causing vehicles which are causing a great threat to the environment. The new policy will also encourage them to opt for vehicles that cause less air pollution.

The policy says the lower green tax will be imposed on Public transport vehicles, like the city buses.

The tax imposed on the vehicles under the green tax policy will vary depending on the type of fuel and type of vehicle. The vehicles in the highly polluted cities will be imposed with a higher green tax.
