This announcement is creating ripples on the internet and the whole cricketing world is reacting to the same. Here are a few such reactions to Kohli's decision to step down as the T20 captain.
"Thanks @imVKohli for your contribution as the #TeamIndia captain. As a young talent the focus and determination you have showed as the captain is unmatched. The most impressive aspect was the way of maintaining balance between captaincy and individual performance," BCCI Secretary Jay Shah tweeted.
"MSD comes In, Virat moves out. How many saw this coming ? #ViratKohli,' Actress Kasthuri tweeted.
"Rohit Sharma has a phenomenal record as a T20 captain. Good Decision by Virat passing on #captaincy smoothly after T20 World Cup. Chance for Rohit Sharma now to transfer his Trophy winning MI record to an Indian national Team!," a netizen name Nizar Ahemad tweeted.
"Surely it came as a shock to hear @imVkohli stepping down from the T20 captaincy after the World Cup. Looking forward to India winning the world cup as it will be a perfect tribute to his captaincy and hope the team carries his legacy forward," former team India player Irfan Pathan wrote.
"so much to rant but some other day maybe. As of now would just request you to win the cup for yourself @imVkohli, not just as a Captain but as a batsman too. Channelize your inner beast. You owe it to him, you got to do it for this guy who lost a piece of his heart in 2016," a netizen named Ricky tweeted.
"Virat as captain in T20Is:
Win-loss record: 29 wins, 14 losses, 2 NR
Batting record: 1502 runs, Avg 48.45, SR 143.18
Among all captains of major teams with 25+ games:
-only two have better win-percentage than Virat's 64.44
-no one has better average than Virat.
#ViratKohli," Rajneesh Gupta tweeted.
Earlier, Kohli took it to social media to announce the news about his decision to step down as the T20 captain of the side. "I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket."
I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward. Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I have also spoken to secretary Mr Jay Shah the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability." he tweeted.
