Central Government came up with a draft National Education Policy recently making Hindi mandatory even in the Non-Hindi Speaking States in the country. Following which, It received severe backlash from states, particularly from Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee opined, 'Centre can't control everything. Each state has got it's own separate language and character. Regional languages deserve priority. Offer importance to mother-tongue, then focus on other languages'.

After the uproar, Union Government removed the mandatory Hindi clause from the draft National Education Policy. When it comes to the 3-language plan, Students are now free to choose the language they wish to study.

Former ISRO Chief K Kasturirangan who is the head of committee which prepared the draft National Education Policy says having a back-up plan helped in addressing the controversy at the earliest.
