Amid Language Row, UN Accepts Hindi under Multilingualism

Hindi as a national language row had rocked the nation with the celebrities from Hindi and other languages making their arguments. While the Hindi-speaking celebrities supported it saying Hindi is indeed the national language, the non-Hindi speaking celebrities opposed it and said that all languages should be respected.

Amid this, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) announced that Hindi is added to the multilingualism resolution so that the information related to the body will be made available in the Hindi language as well so that more people will know what the body is doing. The General Assembly said that the resolution passed by India is accepted.

As Hindi is added to the list of languages used in the body, all the information and messages will be released in the language, along with the other official languages. This is a major wing for India which has been trying to add Hindi as one of the languages in the global body.

It has to be mentioned here that the Union Government is not leaving any stone unturned on Mission Hindi at the United Nations. Back in 2018, India joined hands with the United Nations Department of Global Communications(UN DGC) to make sure that the communication and messages used in the body will be made available in Hindi. Four years of efforts did not go unutilized. For this, India has been making special allocations for the global body.

"This year, for the first time, the resolution has a mention of Hindi language...The resolution also mentions Bangla and Urdu for the first time. We welcome these additions," India's UN Representative said announcing the good news.

As the United Nations has been endorsing its ideology that it wants to keep the information available in as many languages as possible, Hindi is selected. Besides Hindi, Urdu and Bangla were also approved which says that the information will not be made available in the three languages.

Since its inception, six languages were taken as the official languages of the global body which are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. There are a few unofficial languages as well.
