The controversial 'love jihad' legislation passed by the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reached the top country in the country.

The legislation reached the Supreme Court after two lawyers and a law researcher knocked on the doors of the court and filed Public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the law.

In the PIL, the petitioners maintained that the 'love jihad' legislation is against Freedom of religion, freedom of expression. They have argued that the legislations are arbitrary.

The petition has created interest among the public on how the Supreme Court will respond to this. However, the verdict of the Supreme Court in this case is awaited.

Days after the Love Jihad legislation was passed, the Uttar Pradesh police have already arrested two people. The two arrest people belong to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has passed the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020. The ordinance says forcible or fraudulent religious conversions of women is punishable. The guilty will be imprisoned for up to 10 years and a maximum fine of Rs 50,000 will be imposed.
