An American company Northrop Grumman has named its spacecraft after NASA astronaut Kalpana Chawla. The American global aerospace and defence technology company announced that its next Cygnus capsule will be named the "S.S. Kalpana Chawla", the first India-born woman to enter space, for her key contributions to human spaceflight. The spacecraft will be carrying supplies to the International Space Station. The lift-off of the new spacecraft to ISS is scheduled for September 29.

"Today we honour Kalpana Chawla, who made history at @NASA as the first female astronaut of Indian descent. Her contributions to human spaceflight have had a lasting impact," the company tweeted.

Chawla was born and raised in Karnal. She had moved to the United States to complete her higher studies in aerospace engineering. She became the first woman of Indian descent to go to space as a member of the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia on January 16, 2003.
