US State To Get Holiday On Diwali Festival?
By: Tupaki Desk | 19 Jun 2023 6:13 PM ISTIt is known that Indians are in big numbers among people who migrate to the United States every year. The population is growing so rapidly that we can see Indians in every American state. New Jersey has a dense Indian population and there is a mini India in the state.
Last year, United States President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Hariss threw a Diwali reception in 2022 and the reception is said to be a big one in recent times. This is a big example of how strong position Indians enjoy in the superpower nation America.
Now the latest trend says that a US state might declare Diwali as a public holiday and this will make it the second state to have a school holiday on Diwali. A bill saying the same was tabled in the house and once the Governor gives the nod to this, the holiday will become official.
Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar tabled the bill in the house which seeks a school holiday for the Diwali festival in New York State. The New York Senate and Assembly passed the bill and it is now pending with Governor Eric Adams. If he gives his nod to this, then New York will become the second state to have a holiday on the Hindu festival.
Now all eyes are on the Governor to see what happens next in this. This is the third time the bill was tabled in the House. In 2021 and 2022, the bill was tabled. However, the bills were not accepted and were rejected. We have to wait and see what happens this time.
New York also has a good number of Indian population and they are hopeful that luck will shine this time and that the bill will be passed by the Governor.
There are a few states in which the festival is celebrated in a big way. Washington DC celebrates Diwali and there is a state holiday for Diwali in Pennsylvania. If everything goes well then we might see New York having a school holiday for Diwali, which is one of the major Festivals for Indians.
