Venkatagiri TDP suffers from problem of plenty
X
e TDP is suffering serious internal bickering in the all-important Venkatagiri constituency in Nellore district. There are too many claimants for the TDP ticket and the former MLA of the party, who too is a strong claimant for the party ticket, is keeping away from the constituency. Unlike other constituencies, where the TDP does not have candidates, Venkatagiri has a problem of plenty.

Kurugondla Ramakrishna, who represented the TDP in 2004 and 2009, lost to former minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy in the 2019 elections. Since then, he has been focusing on his businesses. He is rarely visiting the constituency. As a result, several grassroots workers have begun approaching the YSRCP. This has led to distrust and doubt in the TDP.

Another major problem is that the politically influential Venkatagiri royal family, which formed the bulwark of support for the TDP, is also said to be alienated from Ramakrishna. They are now keeping away from the TDP. While several TDP leaders at the grassroots level have shifted to the YSRCP, the TDP is unable to lure the disgruntled elements from the YSRCP into its fold.

The TDP leadership wants to put up a strong candidate from Venkatagiri for the 2024 elections. In view of the opposition to Ramakrishna, the TDP is looking at other options. Several BC leaders are trying for the TDP ticket. Meanwhile, realising that the ground is slipping from under his feet, Ramakrishna too has begun visiting the constituency regularly. As a result, there are more ticket aspirants in the TDP than the ruling YSRCP.
