Mallya's Passport Suspended By Government
By: Tupaki Desk | 15 April 2016 5:26 PM ISTThe External Affairs Ministry on Friday suspended the validity of Vijay Mallya's passport for four weeks. The action was taken by the ministry on the request of the Enforcement Directorate. Suspending the passport the ministry directed the businessman to respond within one week as to why it should not be impounded or revoked.
Vijay Mallya was served with notices by ED but he has failed to appear before the agency thrice. On April 13, 2016, the ED sought the revocation of the passport of the Liquor baron. The ED approached the passport office in Mumbai on Wednesday seeking revocation of Mallya's passport.
The Enforcement Directorate summoned mallya to appear before the agency in regards to the loans given to Kingfisher Airlines, for which Vijay Mallya was the guarantor. Rs.900 crore worth loans were given by a consortium of banks.
The ED had said that Mallya has delayed the money laundering investigation by not co-operating with the agency and hence request was made to suspend his passport.
Kingfisher Airlines has defaulted on bank loans of over Rs 7000 crore and it owes over Rs 9000 crore to 17 banks in the country. Last week, Mallya had proposed to pay a sum of Rs. 4000 crore to the lenders by September. Mallya had repeatedly taken to twitter to say that he was not an absconder.
