India's Official Entry for Oscars - Visaranai!

Tamil flick 'Visaranai' directed by National Award Winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran is being chosen as India's Official Entry for Oscar Awards 2017 in the foreign language category.
Ketan Mehta who is the chairman of Film Federation of India announced the news officially in Today's press meet. He told, '29 films have been contention and Jury Members have seen all of them. 'Visaranai' was the unanimous choice'.
Udta Punjab, Baahubali, Sairat, Nil Battey Sannata, Dhanak and Thithi are some of the films which were in the race for the Oscar entry. In the end 'Visaranai', a crime-thriller which explores corruption in police department and cruelty against prisoners, bagged the honour.
India never bagged an Oscar award in the foreign language category. Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988) and Lagaan (2001) managed to receive Oscar nominations.
