The Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) services that enable the users to communicate with others without falling into the radar of cybersecurity make it difficult to detect the hackers and cyber attacks, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs reportedly said.

MediaNama, the firm that provided analysis on the Technology Policy in India in its recent report claimed that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs had put forth the demand of blocking VPNs in India. The committee had submitted a report on the threat posed by the VPNs.

VPNs provide a safe place for criminals and cyber attackers. As these services enable the users to be anonymous and they cannot be traced, tracking down their movements and knowing their conversations might be difficult, MediaNama reportedly said in its report.

Besides blocking the VPNs, the committee had also called for the required measures to make the surveillance system even stronger so that the dark web and the VPN networks can be monitored. For this, the committee came up with a recommendation that the Home Ministry and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology should work together.

To the unversed, the VPN allows the users to browse the internet making their IP Addresses untraceable. The address and location of the VPN users are impossible to trace. The VPN service saw a big jump in users during the pandemic period. The majority of the users use the service to browse the banned content like adult content.

The controversies around VPN services and the demand to ban these services are not new. Earlier too, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs had batted for the demand to ban these services. The Committee had expressed its concern amid the high rise in cybercrime incidents.

The VPNs services were started by the Internet Service Providers to enable the users to transfer the files and secure their networks if they have any issues with the internet connectivity. However, cyber attackers and criminals are using the service as a safe house to carry out their illegal activities. Citing the same reason, the committee had earlier placed the demand of banning the VPN services.
