Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called for an emergency meetings with Bankers on Saturday. Later, He addressed the media to explain the current situation.
Arun Jaitley: 'Although there were few minor issues, Exchange of notes have been progressing in a smooth manner. In the past three days, About 86 percent of the currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations have been exchanged. In SBI alone, Transactions amounting to Rs 2.28 lakh took place. Around 58 lakh people have exchanged notes at SBI branches so far. I thank the people for all the co-operation. Even banking staff were working day and night to coup up the the demand'.
'Replacement of old currency notes is a huge operation. Bank Transactions have been monitored from time-to-time. Few technical issues need to addressed before ATMs were used for dispensing of new currency notes. Any violations while exchange of old notes will be take care of officials. There is no truth in the rumors of electronic chip in Rs 2000 notes. Few political parties & leaders have been reacting to the demonetization in an irresponsible manner'.
