We are staying three farm laws until further orders: CJI Bobde

As a huge blow to the union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the controversial agricultural bills and said the bills will not be implemented as of now.

While staying the bills, the top court said a committee of agricultural experts would be constituted to hold talks with the farmers to keep an end to the crisis.

The new development came after the Constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde issued orders which heard the petition field pertaining to the agricultural bills.

When the Counsels who appeared before the top court on the behalf of the farmers said the farmers are not ready to talk to the expert committees, the CJI said it's a judicial process and the farmers cannot reject the committee.

During the arguments, the CJI said, they are concerned with the laws as it is the matter of life and death. We are trying to solve the issue and we have the power to suspend the legislation.

So far, the Union government held several rounds of talks with the farmers' unions, but the issue wasn't solved with both parties not ready to compromise on their opinions.

It has to be noted that, on Monday, the Supreme Court said, the bench is Extremely Disappointed with the way, the government is handling the protests and farm bills.

The union government introduced three bills, The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020, earlier in 2020.

The farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and some parts of BJP ruled Uttar Pradesh are protesting against the bills. Since 26th November 2020, the farmers have been protesting against the bills at the Delhi border.
