We didn't find any reason to stop a person above 18 from choosing their religion: Supreme Court
By: Tupaki Desk | 10 April 2021 11:45 AM GMTBJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay, who has a reputation for filing political interest Public interest litigation(PIL)s did it yet again. He once again knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court with a PIL on the much-talked-about issue.
Ashwini Upadhyay filed a PIL on religious conversions and sought directives from the Supreme Court to the Centre and states to control the religious conversions and black magic.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices RF Nariman, BR Gavai, and Hrishikesh heard the PIL filed by Ashwini Upadhyay. During the arguments, the bench made some serious comments.
In a serious tone, the bench asked senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayana, who appeared in the Supreme Court for Ashwini Upadhyay, what is the credibility of the petition under Article 32.
Citing that, those who are above 18 years can choose their religions, the Supreme Court bench said, a person above 18 cannot be stopped from choosing their religion.
The Supreme Court bench has also refused to permit representation to the law commission. Refusing to grant the permission, the bench dismissed the petition as withdrawn.
In the plea, Ashwini Upadhyay sought directions from the top court to constitute an Act to monitor the abuse of religion. He alleged that people are being converted by hook or crook.
