Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya was declared loan defaulted after he failed to pay Rs 9,000 crore he owed to various banks. Much to everyone's shock, Ministry of Finance says it's have no information about the loans obtained by now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines CEO.

A Person by name Rajiv Kumar filed an RTI Query seeking details about Vijay Mallya's loans. He moved Central Information Centre (CIC) as the details sought by him weren't provided saying they were exempted under RTI Act. Subsequently, CIC sought necessary information from Finance Ministry. Still, The Ministry of Finance kept saying it lacked any details.

The Chief Information Commissioner RK Mathur found the response from Finance Ministry for RTI query inappropriate. He directed the Ministry to transform the RTI Application to the public authority which can provide the required information.

In March 2017, Union Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar informed Parliament that Rs 8,040 loan obtained by Mallya was declared as non-performing asset (NPA) in 2009.
