In a sudden development that has political undertones, TDP MLA from Vizag North and former minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has on Tuesday written a letter to AP Assembly speaker Tammineni Sitaram requesting him to accept his resignation. Ganta forwarded his resignation letter on February 12 last year as a mark of solidarity with the employees of the Vizag Steel Plant.

He said it has already been over a year since his resignation was pending with the speaker. He requested him to expedite the procedures and accept the resignation. He said he had resigned to express his opposition to the move to privatise the VSP. He said he has resigned as a mark of solidarity with the striking employees.

Political watchers, who have been watching the political moves of Ganta feel that there is more to it than meets the eye in the whole episode. Ganta has been keeping a safe distance from the TDP, on whose ticket he had won in 2019. He made several attempts to join either the YSRCP or the BJP, but failed every time due to some reason or the other. There were rumours that he would join the Jana Sena. But even that did not happen.

Sources say that Ganta wants to focus on the Kapu factor and wants to emerge as the icon of the Kapu community. For the past several months, he has been organizing meetings of the Kapu community leaders. He has been discussing how to bring the Kapus to power. Sources say that Ganta wants to position himself for the new role and hence want to attain a martyr's halo to win the confidence of the people.
