What Was the Hurry, Supreme Court Raps Union Government!

The top court in the nation, the Supreme Court expressed its anger at the Union government over a new appointment. The Apex Court asked what was the need to move the file and make the appointment at a rapid pace. Days after an appointment the Supreme Court slammed the union government.
It is known that Arun Goel was appointed as the Election Commissioner (EC) recently. The Supreme Court wondered what made the Union government go for such a rapid decision as his file was moved without any delay. The bench also said there is a need to look at Goel's file.
"What kind of evaluation is this? Although, we are not questioning the merits of Arun Goel's credentials but the process," the bench said during the hearing. The bench was led by Justice K M Joseph
It is known that the Supreme Court has been hearing a bunch of petitions on how about having a special mechanism to appoint the Election Commissioner without involving the Union government. Saying that an independent mechanism would result in transparency a few petitions were filed.
Popular Public Interest Lawyer Prashant Bhushan is representing the petitioners who moved the Supreme Court seeking a separate mechanism that will possess the power to appoint the Election Commissioner without involving the Government.
"Arun Goel was, till Thursday, working as a secretary-level officer in the government. Suddenly, he was given VRS on Friday and appointed as an election commissioner," Prashant Bhushan said while representing the petitioners.
The five-judge bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi,Aniruddha Bose, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, and CT Ravikumar led by Justice KM Joseph asked about the mechanism under which the officer was selected for the position and asked whether the appointment can be done when the case is being heard by the Apex Court.
"What is the mechanism by which this officer was picked? Can it be done when the matter was being considered by this court?" the bench asked.
Talking about Arun Goel, he is a 1985-batch IAS officer. Before getting appointed as the Election Commissioner, he worked with the Law Ministry. A day after resigning he was appointed as the Commissioner.
