What will the Congress do now? This question is tormenting the political parties in Maharashtra. The Congress, which has won 36 seats in Maharashtra assembly is crucial to the government formation. Shiv Sena and the NCP need its support to form the government. So, the Congress, which now holds the trump card, At least one section of the party believes that it is not wise to join hands with the Shiv Sena.

This section believes that the alliance would spell the doom for the Congress Party. Shiv Sena is blatantly communal and joining hands with it will mean the loss of Muslim votes to the Congress, argues this section. The Muslim voters are already looking towards the MIM in Maharashtra and forming a government with Shiv Sena will only mean that more Muslims would go away from the Congress., says this section. Party spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam has already opposed the alliance and sought to know whether the Congress intends to fight the next election in alliance with the Shiv Sena.

He has also asked the Congress men to be prepared for another election as the government formed in alliance with the Shiv Sena will not be stable. He says that the Congress Party will stand to lose by aligning with the Shiv Sena. There is, however, another section which strongly feels that the Congress should share power by joining hands with the Shiv Sena. This will help the Congress revive itself, they argue. The tussle is likely to continue. Meanwhile, NCP's Sharad Pawar will meet Sonia Gandhi on Monday to discuss the future strategy of the party.
