RK Dhawan who is personal secretary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi opened up for the first time on the untold story behind Emergency in the year 1975.

The Close Aide of PM revealed that Indira Gandhi has called the Lok Sabha election in 1977 upon receiving a report from Intelligence Bureau that Congress would be winning anywhere near 340 seats. He said Indira never expected that he would lose the election.

RK Dhawan was the first person to inform Indira Gandhi about the defeat and she was having dinner then. When she came to know about it, Indira who appeared to be relieved said she would now have time for herself and family.

All these years, People blamed Indira Gandhi for emergency rule during her regime. RK Dhawan, however, differs and reveals its then West Bengal CM Siddhartha Shankar Ray who is architect of emergency rule between June 1975 to March 1977. He said Mr.Ray wrote to Indira Gandhi on January 8th (1975) advising emergency-kind of action and he pressurized her to declare Emergency after Allahabad High Court ruled against her election to Lok Sabha. Soon after hearing the High Court verdict, Indira dictated a letter of resignation but dropped the plans as her Cabinet Ministers insisted her not to do so.
