WHO dismisses opinions on the severeness of Omicron variant

The newly detected variant of Coronavirus Omicron is ringing danger bells across the globe. The variant is currently the driving force of cases in many nations irrespective of its size. Despite this, a few experts have dubbed the new variant as a mild or not so severe variant compared to the previous variants of Covid.
With the various nations logging single-day infections in record numbers, the global health agency World Health Organization(WHO) had stepped in and urged everyone to not take the variant for granted and dismissed the opinion that Omicron is a mild variant.
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held a press conference at the headquarters in Geneva and gave details on how the Omicron is resulting in more and more people catching the virus and how the newly detected is claiming many lives across the globe.
Tedros said that though the Omicron variant is less severe than Delta and other variants among the vaccinated people, the Omicron should not be considered mild and the rapid growth in the Coronavirus cases are severely damaging the global health facilities.
'While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild. Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people. In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world,' Tedros said at the press briefing.
The World Health Organization chief had highlighted how not reaching the vaccination targets is resulting in the Tsunami of the Coronavirus infections. Expressing dissatisfaction over the way a few countries have behaved in sharing the doses, Tedros urged the countries to show some transparency in vaccine sharing at least in 2022.
Adding further, Tedros said that if the existing vaccine roll-out continues to prevail, more than 100 countries will not be able to reach the target of vaccinating the countrymen in the respective nations.
As a piece of news that no one wanted to hear, WHO's Covid-19 technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove opined that they can’t say Omicron will be the last variant of concern. Her comments gave a message to the world that the scare that comes with Covid is not over and it's high time people should up their Covid guard.
