Who is Kanakaraju?

When the new Padma awards were announced late on Monday night, everyone was surprised by one awardee. No one ever heard of this awardee and there was nothing known about him among the chatterati. The media houses frantically ran from pillar to post to collect details about him.
The Padmasri awardee was Kanakaraju. At first, it did not ring a bell. But, later it came to light that Kanakaraju is a tribal from undivided Adilabad district and is known for his Gussadi dance performance. Kanakaraju has trained thousands of the tribals in performing Gussadi dance and is well-known among the tribal communities. All of 63, Kanakaraju had earlier performed in Delhi and wowed the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Kanakaraju is unlettered and did not have any formal education.
Financially poor, Kanakaraju is finding it very difficult to make both ends meet. He did not get any financial support from any quarter. One only hopes the Padma Sri award will bring a change in his life for the better.
