Who Will Be UU Lalit's Successor As Chief Justice Of India?
By: Tupaki Desk | 7 Oct 2022 11:01 AM GMTThe Supreme Court is the top country in the country. For a very long time, the Supreme Court has been following the trend of stepping down CJI naming his or her successor. Previous Chief Justice of India NV Ramana named Uday Umesh Lalit as his replacement. UU Lalit will step down as the CJI next month and it's one month from now.
With only one month left in his tenure, he was asked to name his successor. The Minister of Law and Justice asked the current CJI to recommend a name for the next top judge. The Ministery confirmed this with a tweet.
"As per the MoP on appointment of Chief Justice of India and Supreme Court Judges, today the Hon'ble Minister of Law and Justice sent a letter to the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India for sending his recommendations for appointment of his successor," the tweet reads
The practice of the senior-most judge taking up the big post has been followed in the Apex Court. NV Ramana, UU Lalit, and many more judges were appointed as the Chief Justice of India with the same procedure.
The procedure is that the current CJI will recommend the next top judge. The Law Ministry asks the CJI to send the recommendations. If there is no common opinion on who should be the next CJI, the opinion of the other judges will be taken into consideration.
Looking at the current judges in the Apex Court, Justice D Y Chandrachud appears to be the top pick given his seniority. If the current top judge recommends Justice D Y Chandrachud as the next CJI, then he would serve as the top judge for over two years.
