Why are Chilli farmers ending their lives in this district?

Here’s a heart-breaking report. Despite all the irrigation schemes and the Rythu Bandhu support, over 20 chilli farmers have committed suicide in the Mahabubabad district alone. They ended their lives due to the losses suffered during chilli cultivation. This shocking fact came to light in a study jointly conducted by the Rythu Swarajya Vedika and the Human Rights Forum.

According to the report, these farmers were forced to go in for chilli cultivation as the State Government has barred them from paddy cultivation. The Telangana Government has of late been dissuading the farmers from going in for paddy cultivation. These farmers opted for chilli cultivation and suffered huge losses. Most of these deaths are from K Samudram, Maripeda and Mahabubabad mandals.

The study report said that the chilli cultivation is a cost intensive proposition and that the per acre costs are of the order of Rs 1 lakh. As a result, the farmers are forced to go in for loans. The crop is under attack by Black Thrips pest due to which the farmers have suffered huge losses. The study report claimed that every farmer who ended his life was indebted to the tune of Rs 5 lakh.

The HRF and the Rythu Swarajya Vedika have demanded that the Telangana Government review its no-paddy cultivation policy. They also demanded that the government introduce one-time-settlement policy for repaying of the loans. They also demanded special pension to the kin of those farmers who have committed suicide.
