Why TDP Wants to Avoid Facing Local Polls?
By: Tupaki Desk | 6 March 2020 4:27 AM GMTIs the Opposition Telugu Desam afraid of taking on the YSRCP in the local body elections? Is it wary that if defeated, there could be an exodus from the party into either the YSRCP or into the BJP? Is Chandrababu afraid that his authority on the party would be eroded if the party gets badly drubbed?
Sources withi the TDP say that the TDP boss is wary of facing elections at this juncture. He feels that the YSRCP would further firm up its position and the TDP would lose further more ground. Hence, he is trying everything he can to stall the elections, say TDP insiders.
Sources say that the TDP wants to use the recent High Court judgement which directed the AP Government not to go beyond the 50 per cent quota in reservations. The TDP wants to go to the town telling the people that by agreeing to the Court's decision, the YSRCP government is doing an injustice to the backward classes. Using this alibi, the TDP has gone to the Supreme Court with a special leave petition demanding 34 per cent reservations to the BCs in the local body polls. This will help delay the elections. It is also trying to argue that AP has been giving 65 per cent reservations to the BCs, SCs and STs for over two decades and that by its decision to follow the HC, the YSRCP is doing injustice to the BCs. So, the idea is to portray YSRCP as anti-BC and at the same time try to delay the elections as much as possible .
The real reason, according to insiders is that Chandrababu does not want to face the YSRCP in the elections as the ruling party has largely retained its support base during the last one year, while the TDP has lost significant ground during the same time. It wants to postpone the local body elections at least by another six months.
