Why was Vani Devi made TRS MLC candidate?
By: Tupaki Desk | 22 Feb 2021 4:11 AM GMTIn his typical and inscrutable style, TRS boss KCR has announced former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao's daughter Surabhi Vani Devi as the party candidate for the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahabubnagar Graduate constituency MLC candidate. Though this surprise move, he is hoping to achieve many things.
Firstly, he is robbing the Congress vote as Vani Devi comes from a Congress family and has contacts deep inside the Congress Party. Secondly, as an educationist, she has her students in many places and they can help her in winning the seat. Thirdly, the negative vibes surrounding the non-performance of the TRS government will not rub off on Vani Devi. She can always claim that she is a newcomer to politics and seek votes in the name of her father not in the name of KCR. But, the most important reason is to hit at the roots of the Brahmin vote bank which has largely consolidated behind BJP's candidate and sitting MLC N Ramachandra Rao. Rao is a Brahmin and has been of late trying to consolidate Brahmin votes. By bringing in Vani Devi, the Brahmins can be divided.
Vani Devi will file her nomination on Monday. But, the real issue is whether things would be easy for her? The TRS has largely failed in voter enrollment. Till late, Minister Malla Reddy's son-in-law's name was doing the rounds. But, in the last minute, Vani Devi was chosen as the candidate.
