Congress Candidate from Kamrej Assembly Seat, Ashok Jariwala, in Surat of Gujarat complained about the possibility of hacking and tampering Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the recently held Assembly Polls. 'Near the strong room in the college where EVMs were placed, We detected wi-fi service. We lodged a complaint with the collector two days ago, after which an order was passed suspending the network. Whereas, We found wi-fi service active again Today. We brought it to the notice of Collector and District Election Officer as there is a possibility of hacking and tampering with EVMs,' he said.

That wi-fi service is that of the College and it is meant for Students. EVMs from six Assembly Constituencies (Mahuva, Vyara, Kamrej, Mandvi, Olpad and Mangrol) are kept in the strong room.

After the counting of Gujarat Assembly Polls 2017 began, Patidar Leader Hardik Patel questioned, 'If ATMs can be hacked, Why not an EVM? Attempts were made to hack EVMs in the Patidar-dominated and tribal areas in Gujarat using their source code. 150 Techies of an Ahmedabad-based Company were planning to hack 5,000 EVMs'.
